About Today: How to Haggle

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
Mostly, I love flea markets. I love the chance to find something amazing for not much money. I love the weird tables, the ones with only one thing: suncatchers from the 1970s, for example, or else dozens and dozens of bowling shoes. What I don't love, however, is haggling.

How to Haggle at Flea Markets and Yard Sales
And haggling is kind of a must if you want to do the flea market/yard sale thing properly. There's nothing more embarrassing than spending too much money on something you'll probably re-sell at a yard sale in two years.

10 Tips for Haggling
I get hung up on the first tip: "There's nothing embarrassing about haggling." I'm always afraid that I'm somehow being rude, even when I know haggling is expected.

Video: Haggling Techniques
What did we do before internet video? Watching this is way easier than making my sale-savvier friends show me how it's done.

How to Haggle, for Travelers
For a person who longs to be polite at all times, traveling can be scary. What's good manners at home might be rude somewhere else. This makes shopping in international markets slightly dicey for foreign visitors. Here's how to do it right.

About Today: The Psychology of Color

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
Once upon a time, I worked in an open office where the work spaces were separated by yellow walls. The first day of work, I looked at the walls and thought, "Oh, it's so cheery! Like a bumblebee." A few weeks later, I was thinking, "Like a bumblebee. An ANGRY, ANGRY bumblebee."

The Psychology of Color
Which isn't so strange, as many people believe that certain colors are more calming (or aggravating) than others. My long-ago office, for example, might have instilled more calm if it had been painted blue.

Healing Through Color?
Some alternative practitioners feel that you can heal negative emotions through the use of color. Certainly, there's no harm in trying to make your environment feel more peaceful.

Feng Shui and Color
If you're big on feng shui, you might have seen my office in a different light: Yellow supposedly creates a cozy, cheerful energy. (I think it might be better for kitchens than offices, though.)

Color Therapy and Your Wardrobe
I have an inordinate amount of orange clothing, especially since it's not exactly a common clothing color in the US. According to this, my orange outfits could encourage me to be more energetic and creative.
