When my sister and I were kids, our favorite games were the old-fashioned ones. This was partly because video games weren't much more advanced than two glowing blobs firing pixels at each other, and partly because our Dad was really good at organizing games of tag and hide and seek.

So we spent a lot of time outdoors. This was a good thing, because we also liked to "help" our parents in the kitchen. And then help ourselves to a lot of cookie dough. We definitely needed the exercise.

Sometimes, though, it's going to rain and you'll be stuck indoors. For those times, we had old favorites like Monopoly.

10 Old-Fashioned Games
To this great roundup of classic games and activities I would add only one thing: Pretend to be a horse. Will obviously only appeal to kids who ask for a pony every year for their birthday. Will also annoy the rest of the family, which is probably partly the point.

7 Nature Activities Children Will Love
Another favorite: bird watching. My family still talks about the time we saw a bunch of finches gang up on a blue jay who was trying to steal their birdseed.
